Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu

When it comes to martial arts, everyone wants something that works—something practical and effective, especially in real-world situations. That’s where Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu comes in.

Developed by Grandmaster Moses Powell, Sanuces Ryu blends powerful techniques from various styles to create a system that anyone can learn and use.

Today, I want to take you through what makes Sanuces Ryu so unique, from its roots in traditional martial arts to its real-world applications, and how it can give you the skills and confidence to protect yourself and your loved ones.

What is Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu?

Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu is a martial art system that focuses on efficiency and practicality in self-defense. The name translates to “Survival by Simplicity,” reflecting its emphasis on straightforward techniques that work in real-world scenarios.

Developed in 1959 by Dr. Moses Powell, Sanuces Ryu combines elements from various martial arts, such as jujutsu, karate, and boxing, to create a system that is both versatile and effective.

What sets Sanuces Ryu apart is its accessibility—students of any experience level can begin learning techniques that are immediately useful.

From the first lesson, practitioners gain practical skills designed to be effective under stress, making it an ideal choice for self-defense without the need for years of training or mastering intricate forms.

The Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu System

Born out of the tough streets of New York in the 1960s and 1970s, it’s a system designed to handle unpredictable, high-stress situations. The techniques focus on striking, joint locks, throws, and nerve attacks—powerful moves that get the job done fast.

Dr. Moses Powell developed Sanuces Ryu with guidance from his mentor, Florendo Visitacion (Professor V), the creator of Vee-Jitsu.

Professor V blended traditional Jujutsu with elements of Filipino martial arts like Arnis and Kali, as well as Aikido, Judo, Karate, and even Chinese Kung Fu. Powell took this rich foundation and added his own influences, drawing from boxing, Aikijujutsu, and street combat.

The result? A system that’s sharp, adaptable, and all about staying alive. Whether you’re up against a punch, a grab, or a weapon, Sanuces Ryu’s techniques give you the tools to act decisively. It’s not just a martial art—it’s a way to navigate the chaos of a fight and come out on top.

The Sanuces Creed

“A man or woman of the Martial Arts is one who thinks at all times. They possess speed, form, power, technique, and gracefulness. They move with the roar of thunder and strike at the speed of lightning. That’s what a man or woman of the Martial Arts is.”

This creed is a way of life for Sanuces Ryu practitioners. It reminds us that martial arts is as much about mental focus as it is about physical mastery.

To move with power and grace, to think before action, and to strike with precision and purpose—this is the essence of Sanuces. It’s a path of constant growth and awareness, inside and out.

Grandmaster Moses Powell

Grandmaster Dr. Moses Powell, affectionately known as “Doc,” was a martial arts icon whose revolutionary approach shaped the foundation of modern self-defense systems.

With a 10th-degree red belt and nearly 50 years of martial arts experience, Dr. Powell was a force of nature—physically, mentally, and spiritually. He founded Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu, a system rooted in realism, simplicity, and survival, combining diverse martial disciplines into a seamless and effective art form.

Dr. Powell’s journey toward martial excellence took him across the globe, testing and refining his skills in countless training halls.

He trained in various martial arts, including Vee Jitsu, Shorin-Ryu Karate, and Tomiki Aikido, and was proficient in weaponry ranging from the katana to arnis sticks. His legacy is a cornerstone of Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu history, showcasing his innovative vision and dedication.

Who Taught Moses Powell?

Moses Powell was taught by the legendary Professor Florendo M. Visitacion, or as the martial arts world knows him, Professor Vee. Professor Vee wasn’t just a martial artist—he was a genius who took traditional jujutsu and fused it with Filipino Arnis, Kung Fu, Aikido, and even Judo.

His approach was all about keeping it real and effective. He believed in creating techniques that worked in real-life situations, not just in the dojo. His innovative spirit and dedication to adaptability made him one of the most influential figures in modern martial arts.

The Philosophy Behind Sanuces Ryu

At its core, Sanuces Ryu embodies “sure-ality, spirituality, simplicity, and survival.” Dr. Powell designed the system to empower practitioners to defend themselves effectively in real-world scenarios.

More than a physical discipline, Sanuces Ryu integrates mental clarity and spiritual focus, encouraging students to push beyond their perceived limits. Dr. Powell’s vision extended beyond techniques—he sought to create martial artists who could navigate life with confidence, adaptability, and purpose.

A Legacy of Impact

Dr. Powell’s influence reached far beyond martial arts circles.

Breaking Barriers in Law Enforcement and Military Training

As the first African American to train elite law enforcement and military units, including the DEA, FBI, and Secret Service, Dr. Powell shattered barriers. His work elevated the practical application of martial arts in these fields, showcasing its effectiveness in real-world scenarios.

Humanitarian Contributions Through Martial Arts

His humanitarian efforts were equally impactful—he used martial arts as a tool to reform lives, particularly within underserved and marginalized communities. For his contributions, he received the prestigious International Benin Award in 1972, cementing his legacy as not just a martial artist, but a global changemaker.

Influence on Modern Martial Arts Systems

Today, several well-known martial arts schools have integrated elements of Sanuces Ryu into their programs. Additionally, Sanuces Ryu has influenced other martial arts systems like Gracie Jiu Jitsu and BJJ, primarily in its approach to grappling and submissions.

Many practitioners who initially trained in Gracie Jiu Jitsu or BJJ Fanatics find Sanuces Ryu to be a complementary system that enhances their overall fighting abilities.

What does Shito Ryu mean?

Shito Ryu is a style of karate that beautifully blends tradition and technique. Created by Kenwa Mabuni in 1939, the name honors his two main teachers, Ankō Itosu and Kanryō Higaonna, by combining the first kanji from their names—”Shi” from Itosu and “To” from Higaonna. Shito Ryu strikes a balance between the hard, linear moves of Shuri-te and the softer, circular techniques of Naha-te, making it a well-rounded and deeply respected martial art.

What fighting style is best against Jiu-Jitsu?

Fighting styles like Muay Thai or boxing can be effective against Jiu-Jitsu due to their focus on powerful strikes and distance management. The best way to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is through consistent practice at a reputable BJJ academy. Start by attending beginner classes to build a strong foundation in techniques like guard passing, submissions, and escapes. Sparring (rolling) with higher belts and maintaining a focus on both technique and physical conditioning will help you progress faster.
