  1. Stance and Balance: It all starts with a strong stance. Teach kids to stand with their feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and hands raised in a guard position. This position helps them maintain balance and stay grounded.
  2. Blocking and Redirecting: Basic blocks are essential. Teach kids to use their forearms to deflect incoming attacks. Simple movements like raising an arm to block a grab or push can make a big difference.
  3. Verbal Defense Skills: Sometimes, the most effective way to prevent a situation from escalating is to use strong, assertive language. Teach children to say things like “Stop! Leave me alone!” in a clear, firm voice.

Escaping Holds and Grabs: Easy-to-Learn Moves

When a child is grabbed, it’s essential they know how to break free quickly and safely. Here are a few techniques kids can use:

  • Wrist Grab Escape: Teach kids to make a fist with the hand that’s being grabbed and twist it towards the thumb of the grabber. This simple move leverages their own strength and can free them from many types of wrist grabs.
  • Shoulder Grab Release: If someone grabs their shoulder, instruct the child to use their opposite arm to push the attacker’s hand away while stepping back, creating distance between them and the attacker.

These techniques are straightforward and can be practiced at home or in class under supervision. Once these foundational skills are mastered, children are more prepared to handle more complex situations.
